Technical info re ireal pro12/11/2023 You can't do that when it's you, a vocalist, and a tune you don't know. I've done plenty of, say, quartet gigs with a rhythm section where I can stroll for a chorus and learn the changes. And if I show up to a gig and the singer's book has a chords-only chart for, say, a tune from the B-side of a Sinatra record that I've never heard before, and there's not enough information for me to construct a good intro, know where the melody comes in, etc., that can't be faked like it can be with a real chart.Įdit: I should mention the gig in question was me, a guitarist, with a singer. Personally, I know hundreds of tunes I've been off the book at my duo/trio gigs for over a decade. What I'm referring to is when I show up to the gig, and a singer-it's their gig-gives me a book, and it's got a tune I don't know in it with a crap, iReal Pro chart as opposed to a real chart. To previous generations it was a way of life. To many, playing standards is simple and mundane. Meanwhile the older cats who would hit you upside the head if they even saw you using a real book are few and far between.there is less and less responsibility and enthusiasm for the music. and a lot of the time these weekend warrior, play-jazz-on-the-side guys won't do it for much, eliminating good paying gigs for working full time musicians. It's destroying the live "background" jazz scene, because maybe some think it's "just" background music at a restaurant but the level of musicianship for these gigs has gone down and down. You HAVE to know the melody, have good charts, know what key you are in, what the appropriate style, tempo, intros. Even if it's a suitable duo like piano and horn!! There is so much being lost lately. There is a "bandleader" in my state (HORRIBLE over-exaggeration) who books gigs and he DEMANDS the musicians use irealb backing tracks. With only chords to work with, I can't do this if I don't know the tune. I can usually create a chord melody on the spot, so if I have a real chart, we get a nice, professional sounding intro on the fly. You can read PDF music charts while using iReal Pro.More info about. Multitasking on tablet iReal Pro 7 and higher supports multitasking on newer iPad models. It's nice to have the last 4 or 8 bars to use as an intro. Image Create a chart in iReal Pro You can edit an existing chord chart or create a new one from scratch. We recorded three videos - for iOS, OS X and Android - showing how to. If you're pressed for time and creating a chart, at the very least include a cue of the first two or so measures. This guy I was working with counted off a tune, and although the melody starts in the pickup measure, he started on beat one. I didn't know the tune, so I didn't know where the melody comes in. Here are the two main problems that occurred: I'm not gonna say it's inherently a bad resource-for the money, it's incredible-but if you're building a book for musicians to read from on the gig, either use charts from a fake book that include the melody or, if you're a singer and the book is in a different key than the one you sing it (and you don't have the music/notation chops to create a chart in your key), pay a musician to make a chart for you. Over the past couple weeks, I did three gigs with singers whose books were chock full of printouts from iReal Pro.
